The following are excerpts from many of the excellent reviews we have been fortunate to have received:
“…And though the ribs are about my favorite thing on the menu, I’d say it’s the soulful hospitality that qualifies this cubbyhole in downtown Oakland as the real McCoy. It’s immaculate.” San Francisco Magazine, March 1999.
“The best barbecue brisket Oakland has to offer. On a corner of San Pablo Avenue in downtown Oakland is a cute green and white cottage…venture inside Chef Edward’s Bar-B-Que because what awaits you is some of the best barbecue brisket Oakland has to offer. The tiny restaurant has a home-style feel inside and out. You are greeted by Chef Edwards himself — a congenial man who’s proud of his barbecue and will chat you up about the specials and the array of sides. The chicken ($7.50) with a fabulous smoky flavor and so tender it slid off the bone, was cooked to perfection. Don’t pass up Chef Edward’s special pork roast sandwich served with Moma’s cole slaw. Everything comes with a choice of one or two sides, and the list of sides is lengthy. The side of greens couldn’t have been better. If the Chef hasn’t run out of it, be sure to try the hot water cornbread ($1). It was excellent.” Oakland Tribune: Dining Out, September 2000.
“The folks at Chef Edwards welcomed us like family, and this little eatery won the award for ambience—not to mention their hot-water cornbread and Piggly Wiggly sandwich” East Bay Express, June 2000.
